Former Home Minister Nasim Released on Bail

Former home minister Mohammad Nasim, convicted of graft, was released from police guard on bail Saturday but remains at LabAid Cardiac Hospital, a top prisons official said.

Deputy inspector general of prisons Shamsul Haider Siddiqui told VOA that the authority have removed prison guards from the Mohammad Nasim's room who is also a leader of Awami League , one of the major political parties of Bangladesh.

 On Aug 6, the High Court granted four months' bail to Nasim, who was hospitalized on June 24 following a stroke and has been undergoing treatment since then.

 A special court sentenced Nasim to 13 years in jail on Oct 8, 2007, for amassing illegal wealth worth Tk 1.26 crore. He was arrested on Feb 4, 2007, after the state of emergency was enforced.
