Heavy rains and flooding in the southern U.S. state of Texas in recent days have killed four people, emergency officials said.

Residents across several counties are bracing to see whether they will have to evacuate their homes as the floodwaters rise.

Some towns have already issued mandatory evacuation orders.

The heavy downpour has closed roads and schools and stranded motorists.

More rain is expected over the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

Elsewhere, tropical storm Bonnie is delivering heavy rainfall across coastal South Carolina.

Bonnie is expected to produce life-threatening surf and rip current conditions along portions of the southeastern United States.

Weather forecasters say tornadoes are possible early Sunday over South Carolina's coastal region.
