Ahead of a full trial later this year, the UN-backed Khmer Rouge Tribunal will hold an initial hearing July 30 for two aging regime leaders.
Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan are being tried in two phases for atrocity crimes, including genocide. The first phase was completed earlier this year and focused mainly on the forced evacuation of Phnom Penh.
A tribunal spokesman said in an interview with VOA Khmer on Friday that the hearing late next month will focus on victim repatriation, potential witnesses and other legal matters.
Phase two will examine Khmer Rouge detention centers and work collectives. It also will review the roles of Chea, the regime’s chief ideologue, and Samphan, its nominal head of state in various alleged atrocities, including genocide.
