Yemeni counterterrorism forces rescued eight hostages from their al-Qaida kidnappers in a raid Tuesday.
Seven al-Qaida members were killed and one Yemeni soldier was wounded. The identities of the hostages were unclear, but at least six were Yemeni and one was a foreigner.
The Pentagon denied a report that one of the hostages was American, but it applauded the Yemeni government's rescue operation.
Yemeni officials did not disclose where the hostages were being held, but it said forces went into action as soon as they found out the location.
A spokesman said the military would spare no effort to maintain security and stability.
