06 April 2008

Palestinian medical officials say a Palestinian boy has been killed during fighting between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip.

Medical workers say the boy died Sunday after being hit by shrapnel from an Israeli tank shell.  They say one Palestinian was wounded in the same incident between the Israeli border and the Bureij refugee camp in central Gaza.

The Israeli military says its ground forces carried out an incursion against Palestinian threats along the border today.

Israel says it is trying to stop Palestinian militants from firing rockets into the Jewish state.  The militants say they are responding to Israeli operations.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert are to meet Monday to assess the state of peace efforts.

Their last meeting was in February.

The peace talks have been strained in recent weeks by Palestinian militant attacks and Israel's expansion of settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

The U.S.-backed plan calls for Israel to remove illegal settlement outposts and ease travel restrictions on Palestinians. It also demands the Palestinian leadership control the militants.
