Cameroon Says 11 Dead After Army Clashes With Militants

24 July 2008

Authorities in Cameroon say at least 11 people are dead after clashes between the Cameroonian army and a group of armed attackers.

Cameroon's defense minister, Remy Ze Meka, said Thursday that unidentified gunmen had attacked a military camp in the Bakassi peninsula.

The minister said Cameroonian troops shot and killed 10 of the attackers.  He said at least one soldier also died of wounds sustained in the attack.

Cameroon and Nigeria have long disputed ownership of the Bakassi peninsula.  Under a World Court ruling, Nigeria has already handed over most of the peninsula to Cameroon and is set to transfer control of the remaining area later this year.

A Nigerian rebel group, the Niger Delta Defence and Security Council, has claimed responsibility for previous attacks in the Bakassi region.  The group strongly opposes Nigeria's plans to hand over the peninsula to Cameroon.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
