Pakistani troops have foiled a suicide attack on a military camp in the country's northwest following the arrest of a Taliban commander.

Pakistani officials say troops opened fire Friday on a car as it raced past security checkpoints in a road tunnel - the Kohat Tunnel - leading to a base in the town of Darra Adam Kheil.  

They say the car exploded before reaching the base, killing two civilians and wounding about 30 people, including soldiers.

Pakistani officials say the attack came after forces arrested a Taliban commander and three of his associates at the same tunnel Thursday.

Also Thursday, the top U.S military officer said he is encouraged by Pakistani actions to quell violence in tribal areas, but that Islamabad and Washington can do more to combat the growing militant threat.

The chairman of the U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, says he and Pakistani army chief General Ashfaq Kayani discussed strategies during a meeting on a U.S. aircraft carrier in the Indian Ocean Wednesday.

Those in attendance included the top American commander in Iraq, General David Petreaus, and other high-ranking U.S. and Pakistani officers.

Mullen said the meeting was not about demanding greater action from Pakistan, but rather an effort to discuss how best the two countries can confront the problem together.
