Eliz:       Welcome once again to “Culture Tips” with Gary Engleton.

Today, our e-mail question is “What does the expression “I’m sorry” really mean?”

“Americans seem to use it so many different ways.”

Gary:         It’s true that “I’m sorry” has different meanings.

                  Sometimes it’s really an apology

For example, if I step on your foot, I’ll say, “Oh, I’m sorry.”

In that case, you’ve made a mistake and are apologizing.

Eliz:      What else can it mean?

Gary:      Well, it’s used very often for a polite disagreement.

Someone says, for example, “I think that we should hire more engineers.”

You can say, “I’m sorry, but I don’t think that’s a good idea.”

“I’m sorry, but.....” is very common in business.

Eliz:      What about, “I’m sorry that you’re sick.”

Gary:      That’s a good example of using “I’m sorry” for expressing sympathy.

Eliz:          So it’s hard to know if “I’m sorry” is an apology, or some other language function.

Gary:      Yes, you’re right, and I’m sorry that there are so many meanings.

Eliz:      And I’m sorry that we’ve run out of time.

                  Thanks for your valuable information.

Gary:         It was my pleasure.
