Israeli Police Arrest Palestinian Presidential Candidate

Israeli police detained Palestinian presidential candidate Mustafa Barghouti as he campaigned Monday in east Jerusalem.

The arrest came a day after the Israeli cabinet approved measures allowing Palestinian candidates to campaign in east Jerusalem, which Israel captured in the 1967 war and later annexed.

Jerusalem police say Mr. Barghouti had permission to travel through Jerusalem but not to remain in the disputed city. Israeli media say police released the Palestinian several hours later.

Earlier, Israeli troops shot and killed a Palestinian militant they were trying to arrest near the West Bank city of Nablus. Israeli authorities say troops first shot out the tires of the militant's car, then shot him when he tried to run over the soldiers. Witnesses said the Israeli troops were dressed as civilians.
