Wisconsin-Milwaukee has pulled off the first upset of the U.S. college basketball national championship tournament, stunning Alabama, 83-73. Joah Tucker and Ed McCants scored 21 points apiece to get their 12th seeded team past fifth-seeded Alabama.
Also in early action Thursday, Pacific ousted Pittsburgh in a mild upset, 79-71.
Other first-round games went as expected with the higher seeds winning. Boston College easily defeated Pennsylvania, 85-65. Kentucky was a 72-64 winner over Eastern Kentucky. Cincinnati downed Iowa, 76-64. Utah had only a two point lead in the waning seconds before a steal and foul led to a 60-54 victory over UTEP. Oklahoma had an easier win against Niagara, 84-67.
Regional top seed Washington was an 88-77 winner over Montana.
