Brain Damaged Woman's Parents Appeal to US Supreme Court

The parents of a severely brain damaged Florida woman have filed an emergency appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court to have her feeding tube reinserted.

Terri Schiavo's parents made their request Wednesday night after a federal appeals court refused to hear the case and the Florida legislature decided not to intervene.

The Supreme Court has had other opportunities to get involved in the Schiavo case but declined to do so.

Meanwhile, Florida Governor Jeb Bush is seeking a state court's permission to grant the state protective custody of Mrs. Schiavo. He cites new challenges to her diagnosis as being in a persistent vegetative state.

Mrs. Schiavo's feeding tube was disconnected Friday. Her husband, Michael, says she would not want to be kept alive artificially and has fought for years with her parents over whether she should be allowed to die.
