French Court Convicts Son of Libyan Leader

A Paris court has sentenced a son of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi to a suspended a four-month prison term for striking his pregnant companion.

The court convicted Hannibal Gadhafi for voluntary violence on a vulnerable person, and for the unauthorized possession of a pistol. He was also fined more than $600.

Authorities say they arrested the younger Gadhafi in February in a Paris hotel after he struck the woman, who was taken to a local hospital for treatment. Officials say he carried, but did not shoot, an unauthorized pistol.

The French Foreign Ministry said it has expressed concern to Libyan authorities over "repeated incidents" in France involving the defendant. These included a police chase last year in Paris.
