Kidnapped Election Workers Freed in Afghanistan

Local officials in Afghanistan's northeastern Nuristan Province say three Afghans who had been kidnapped earlier in the week have been found unharmed.

The three had been reported abducted from a house in the Kamdesh district of Nuristan Province. At least two of the three Afghans were election workers. No further details were immediately available.

More than three years after a U.S.-led coalition ousted the Taleban regime, loyalists are waging an escalating guerrilla campaign ahead of Afghanistan's September parliamentary vote.

In recent days in Kandahar Province, a judge and a district administrator were killed in attacks believed to have been carried out by insurgents.

More than 700 people have been killed in the violence this year.
