Muslim Separatists Temporarily Suspend Violence in Quake-Hit Indian Kashmir

The main Pakistan-based Kashmiri separatist alliance has announced a temporary suspension of all violence in earthquake-devastated areas of Indian Kashmir.

The Jihad Council faxed a statement to a local news agency Sunday saying it had put on hold all militant operations in the affected areas.

The statement said Syed Salahuddin, the chief commander of the Kashmiri rebel group Hizbul Mujahedin has directed its cadres to suspend all rebel violence until further notice.

However, Indian police report more violence in Indian Kashmir.

Police say suspected Islamic militants killed at least 10 people late Sunday and early Monday, most of them Hindus. None of the rebel groups operating in Kashmir claimed responsibility for the attacks.
