Suspected Afghan Militants Kill 7 in Two Separate Attacks

Afghan officials say suspected Taleban rebels have killed seven people in two separate attacks.

In the first attack late Monday, militants fired rocket-propelled grenades at a U.S. military-led convoy, but they missed their target and killed six Afghan civilians instead. Three other civilians were wounded in the attack on a highway in Logar province, just outside the capital, Kabul.

Hours later, near the city of Jalalabad, militants opened fire on a police vehicle, killing a senior police officer and wounding two others.

The French News Agency quotes a purported spokesman for the ousted Taleban as saying the group was responsible for both attacks.

Taleban-led rebels have increased violence in southern and eastern regions of Afghanistan in the past six months, killing more than 1,100 people.
