The United States has won the Hopman Cup mixed team tennis tournament for the fourth time, after defeating the Netherlands, 2-1, in Perth, Australia.
Michaella Krajicek of the Netherlands beat American Lisa Raymond in singles, 6-4, 7-6. However, Taylor Dent of the United States won the men's singles over Peter Wessels, 6-1, 6-4.
Dent and Raymond then won the mixed doubles match 4-6, 6-2, 10-7, in a match tiebreak. Under the Hopman Cup rules, if the mixed doubles match is tied after two sets, the teams play a tiebreaker instead of a third set.
This is the fourth time in 18 years the United States has won the event, more than any other nation.
The hard-court tournament is also a key warm-up for the Australian Open, the first major tournament of the year that starts January 16 in Melbourne.
