US Extradites War Crimes Suspect to Croatia

update

An ethnic Serb has been extradited from the United States to Croatia to serve a 20-year prison sentence for war crimes committed after Croatia's 1991 declaration of independence from the former Yugoslavia.

Justice Ministry officials in Zagreb say Mitar Arambasic is being held in prison in the Croatian capital.

A Croatian court convicted him of war crimes committed while he was chief of police in a village outside the town of Knin in what was in the early 1990s a Serb-held area of the country.

The suspect fled to the United States in 2000 as a refugee and settled in the midwestern state of South Dakota. Croatia sought his extradition the following year and U.S. authorities arrested him in 2002 on an international warrant.
