Uganda's Supreme Court has rejected a legal challenge to President Yoweri Museveni's recent election victory, brought by the East African nation's main opposition party.
In a ruling Thursday in Kampala, the court acknowledged there were irregularities during the voting, but said these were minor problems that did not have a substantial effect on the outcome.
The vote on February 23 extended Mr. Museveni's 20-year hold on power in Uganda. He easily won re-election with 59 percent of the vote, compared to 37 percent for Kizza Besigye of the Forum for Democratic Change. The opposition party had asked the high court to overturn the results, charging they were distorted by bribery and government intimidation.
Besigye is facing trial on charges of treason, after Uganda's High Court dismissed a separate rape charge against him last month. The opposition leader's supporters say the charges against him are politically motivated.
