Palestinian Minister: Gaza Militants Present List for Possible Prisoner Swap

update

A Palestinian official says Gaza militants have presented a list of Palestinian prisoners they would like freed in exchange for a kidnapped Israeli soldier.

Palestinian Information Minister Mustafa Barghouti said Saturday the list was given to Israel through Egyptian mediators. He said the next move is up to Israel.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said in an interview broadcast Friday on French television that the militants will soon release Corporal Gilad Shalit. Shalit's abduction in a cross-border raid by militants last June sparked a major confrontation between Israel and the Palestinians.

There was no Israeli comment on the latest developments.

In other news, an Israeli air strike in a border area in the Gaza Strip killed a Palestinian militant and injured two others.

Israel says the militants were planting a bomb. Residents say it was the fiercest attack since a ceasefire went into effect more than four months ago.

Dozens of Palestinian rockets have been fired since the ceasefire began, and Israel accuses militants of planting 40 bombs along the border fence.

The Israeli defense minister recently authorized limited military action against militants in Gaza if they are a threat to Israel.

In other news, Israeli troops shot and wounded the local leader of the Al Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, Zakariye Zubeydi, during a clash in the Jenin refugee camp in the West Bank.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP, AP and Reuters.
