Car Bomb Kills 40 in Iraqi City of Karbala

Iraqi officials say a car bomb attack at a bus station in the Shi'ite holy city of Karbala has killed at least 40 people and wounded more than 50 others.

State television showed rescue workers evacuating casualties.

The attack took place about 200 meters from the Imam Hussein shrine, one of the most sacred shrines of Shi'ite Islam.

Elsewhere, police say a car bomb blast on a southern Baghdad bridge killed at least 10 people and wounded 15 others.

It was the second attack on a major bridge in Baghdad this week. On Thursday, a suicide truck bomb collapsed a bridge in northern Baghdad, killing at least eight people and sending several cars plunging into the Tigris River.

Meanwhile, Iraqi lawmakers convened Friday to express condemnation and resolve during a special session following a bombing Thursday at the parliament building.

The apparent suicide bombing in the assembly's cafeteria killed Sunni Arab deputy Mohammad Awad of the National Dialogue Party and injured about 20 other people.
