Train Carrying Space Shuttle Parts Derails in Alabama

update

A train carrying parts for U.S. space shuttles derailed Wednesday when a bridge collapsed, but space agency officials say the accident will not delay the next shuttle launch.

NASA says the accident took place in the southeastern state of Alabama, as the train carried segments of solid rocket boosters from their manufacturer in Utah to Cape Canaveral in Florida. At least two people were injured in the incident and were taken to hospitals.

A NASA spokeswoman said the rocket boosters were meant to be used in October and December launches, rather than the upcoming June mission. NASA engineers are traveling to the site of the crash to check the equipment for damage.

The same train suffered a temporary derailment last week while traveling through the state of Kansas.

Some information for this report was provided by AP and Reuters.
