Iraq Green Zone Attack Foiled; Seven US Soldiers Killed

U.S. military forces in Iraq say they prevented a planned rocket attack on Baghdad's heavily fortified Green Zone

Military officials Sunday said U.S. helicopters late Saturday strafed militants preparing to fire rockets into the walled area that houses Iraqi government buildings and the U.S. Embassy. Four militants were killed in the air strike south of the capital's Sadr City district.

Separately, Iraqi police say a suicide car bomber killed 10 people and wounded at least 25 others Sunday in an attack on a police convoy north of Baghdad. A police spokesman said at least one police officer was killed.

Meanwhile, U.S. military officials announced Sunday that seven U.S. troops were killed in six separate incidents on Saturday. Officials said one soldier was killed by a suicide bomber near Baghdad while the others died from explosives or small arms fire around Baghdad, in Diyala Province and in Ninewah Province.

On Saturday, insurgents bombed a bridge on a strategic highway that connects Baghdad to the oil hub of Kirkuk and other cities to the north. The attack stopped all traffic along the road.
