Hingis Banned Two Years For Doping

The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has announced that former world No.1 Martina Hingis of Switzerland has been banned for two years for testing positive for cocaine at Wimbledon last year.

Hingis had already announced her retirement in November after the accusations of cocaine use were made public. The 27-year-old had vehemently denied using drugs but decided not to fight the case.

The ITF said an independent anti-doping tribunal found that Hingis had committed an offense and rejected suggestions there were any doubts over her test sample.

The suspension for the five-time Grand Slam winner is backdated to October first, 2007. The ITF also disqualified Hingis's results from last year's Wimbledon and any subsequent tournaments in which she played. She also forfeits any ranking points gained and about $130,000 in prize money.
