Swine Flu Hurts Oil Prices and Stock Markets


Worries about the spread of swine flu virus pushed down oil prices and stock markets in the U.S., Europe, and Mexico Monday.

At one point, major Mexican stock indexes fell more than three percent, European share prices were off as much as one percent, while U.S. stocks fell about one half of a percent.

Prices for crude oil declined more than $3 a barrel on worries that the flu outbreak could curtail air travel.

News reports ay European Union officials are urging their citizens to avoid non-essential travel to the United States and Mexico, while Washington may warn Americans to curtail visits to Mexico as well.
