Ice Hockey Championships: Slovakia Defeats Russia 4-3

Peter Bondra scored with less than two minutes left to give Slovakia a 4-3 victory over Russia in the 2002 ice hockey world championships Saturday in Sweden.

The game winner was the second goal of the game for Bondra, who plays professionally in the United States for the Washington Capitals.

Slovakia's victory marks the first ice hockey world championship for the young nation. Team general manager Peter Stastny says the whole country has been sent into what he calls a "volcano of euphoria."
