ICC Turns Down Request to Shift Kenya World Cup Match - 2003-02-20

update

The International Cricket Council has turned down a request from New Zealand to shift their world cup match against Kenya from Nairobi to South Africa. The New Zealand team says it will not play in Kenya.

The world cup match between New Zealand and Kenya has been cancelled and New Zealand has forfeited four crucial points.

The New Zealanders refused to play in Kenya because they were concerned there could be a repeat of the November terror attack in Mombasa which 15 people were killed. Kenya opposed New Zealand's application to move the match to South Africa.

South Africa has sent a specialist security force and equipment to Nairobi to assist the Kenyan authorities in safeguarding the visiting cricket teams. South African security experts say they are confident the teams and supporters will be safe during matches played in Nairobi.

Last week the International Cricket Council refused an application by the England team to move its match against Zimbabwe from Harare to South Africa. England also forfeited four points.
