The U.S. television industry has nominated a funeral home drama and and a fictional White House political drama for its top honors in the Emmy Awards.
The HBO program Six Feet Under, a drama depicting a family of funeral directors, picked up 16 nominations Thursday, including one for best drama.
It beat strong competition from the White House serial, The West Wing, which was nominated in 15 categories. The program won an Emmy last year for best drama.
Comedy nominees include last year's winner, Friends, as well as Everybody Loves Raymond, Sex in the City, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Will and Grace.
The Emmy awards will be broadcast from Los Angeles on September 21.
