S. African Pop Star Killed in Road Rage Shooting - 2004-02-14

A top South African pop star, Tebogo Madingoane, has been shot dead in a road rage incident.

Police say the 32-year old singer, who was a member of the chart-topping group Mafikizolo, was killed after getting into an argument with another driver Saturday, in the township of Soweto outside Johannesburg.

South African news reports say the pop star was driving with his girlfriend when another car drove through a red light, which angered Mr. Madingoane. The two drivers then got out of their cars and began arguing.

Police say they have arrested a suspect in Mr. Madingoane's killer.

Mafikizolo is one of South Africa's most popular groups. It won awards for best African pop and best group at the 2003 South African Music Association Awards. The group has also earned good reviews in other African countries as well as the United State and Europe.

Mafikizolo specializes in music known as "kwaito," combining hip-hop and dance beats.
