Former Jamaican Prime Minister Edward Seaga says he plans to resign his parliamentary seat, ending a political career of more than four decades.
Mr. Seaga says he will step down next month as representative for the West Kingston constituency and take an academic position at the University of the West Indies.
The Boston-born politician has held his parliamentary seat since 1962 -- longer than any other Jamaican legislator.
Earlier this year, Mr. Seaga resigned as head of the opposition Jamaica Labor Party, or JLP. He said the move would allow the next JLP leader to consolidate the opposition party before local government elections scheduled for 2006.
Mr. Seaga served as the country's prime minister from 1980 to 1989.
