Tibet's spiritual leader the Dalai Lama has left the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, after what his office called a routine annual check-up.
The Nobel Peace Laureate left the clinic Wednesday, later meeting with members of Minnesota's Tibetan community at a civic center in Rochester.
The 80-year-old spiritual leader this week canceled planned visits in the United States in October at the advice of doctors who urged him to rest for several weeks.
Neither his office, nor the Mayo Clinic, released any details about his health.
Tibetan expat Dorjee Damdul of Minneapolis said the Dalai Lama looked happy and healthy. Damdul said he was grateful for a chance to meet the Dalai Lama.
"It means the world to us,'' Damdul said. "He is our religious leader.''
China has ruled Tibet with an iron fist since Communist troops took over the region in 1950. Beijing regards the Dalai Lama, who fled into exile in India in 1959, as a dangerous separatist who wants an independent Tibet.
The Dalai Lama has repeatedly refuted those claims and has advocated greater autonomy for Tibet within China through dialogue with Beijing.
