18 Wounded in Attack in Western Afghanistan

Afghan authorities say 18 people were wounded when a bomb planted on a bicycle exploded in western Afghanistan.

Wednesday's attack was carried out in a crowded marketplace in the city of Herat.

Officials say the remote-controlled bomb was detonated as people were shopping for Eid, a major holiday on the Islamic calendar.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility.

The attack comes after nearly 50 people died in one of the bloodiest days in Afghanistan in recent months.

Separately, NATO said one of its service members was killed in an insurgent attack Wednesday in eastern Afghanistan.

On Tuesday, coordinated suicide bombings killed 36 people in the usually peaceful city of Zaranj in southwestern Afghanistan. Also, at least nine people died when a bomb planted on a motorcycle exploded in the northern Afghan province of Kunduz.

Some information for this report was provided by AFP and Reuters.
