Frank Thornton, British TV's 'Captain Peacock,' Dies at 92


Actor Frank Thornton, the pompous and pretentious Captain Peacock on the British television comedy series Are You Being Served? has died at 92.

Thornton began his career in the theater in the early 1940s. He returned to the stage after serving in World War II and soon found himself playing comedy roles on television and films.

Viewers around the world knew him as Captain Peacock, the stiff and humorless floorwalker in a dreary London department store on British TV's Are You Being Served? The series ran from 1973 until 1985.

Thornton also co-starred in another popular British series, Last of the Summer Wine.



He is survived by his wife of 67 years, actress Beryl Evans, a daughter and three grandchildren.
