German skier Maria Hoefl-Riesch has won her third Olympic gold medal, after taking first place Monday in the women's super combined in Sochi, Russia.

"It was a big fight and it wasn't easy because the snow was tough and bumpy,'' she told reporters. "The hill was steep at the start, which I found especially difficult.
It didn't feel great, but I skied fast enough.

Hoefl-Riesch beat Austria's Nicole Hosp and American Julia Mancuso to repeat her gold medal performance from the 2010 games in Vancouver.

Later Monday, Ole Einar Bjoerndalen goes for a record 13th career winter Olympic medal, as he competes in the 12.5 kilometer biathlon pursuit.

Medals are also being awarded Monday in men's moguls skiing, and the men's 500-meter speed skating and 1,500-meter short track speed skating events.

Curling began for both men and women Monday, with four of the six medalists from the 2010 games facing off against each other in their opening matches.

Norway leads the overall medal count with seven, and is tied with the U.S. and the Netherlands for the most gold medals with two.

There are 98 medal events at the Sochi Games, 12 more than in Vancouver.
