Police tear gas children from the Langata Road Primary School during a protest over a land dispute Jan. 19, 2015 in Nairobi.

Police in Kenya on Monday tear-gassed a group of schoolchildren who were protesting the loss of their playground to a private land developer.

Video from Nairobi shows children running in panic after police in riot gear dropped a tear gas canister at the front of a large crowd. At least three children were injured in the commotion.

Students and adults later knocked down part of a perimeter wall, allowing children to run in and play on the grass.

The land in question belonged to Langata Road Primary School but was recently claimed by the developer, reportedly for a parking lot for an adjacent hotel.

A member of parliament, Kenneth Okoth, and local activists have demanded the land be returned to the school.

Kenya's Daily Nation newspaper quotes government land officials as saying there are documents showing the school is the true owner of the land.
