Lebanese soldiers battled Islamist fighters in Tripoli.
The government sent several tanks, armored personnel carriers and commandos into Lebanon's second largest city Sunday. Sporadic gunfire and explosions were heard throughout the Bab Tabbaneh neighborhood.
The army said six of its soldiers were killed in the fighting in the northern port city, along with two civilians. The Reuters news agency said nine militants were also killed.
The fighting broke out Friday, although the exact affiliation of the insurgents was not known.
Politicians across Lebanon's deeply divided political field have condemned the violence, but by late Sunday there was no sign the fighting was coming to a close.
