NATO, Afghan Forces Kill Key al-Qaida Affiliate

NATO said Saturday coalition and Afghan forces have killed a former detainee at the U.S. facility in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, who became a key al-Qaida affiliate after returning to Afghanistan.

A coalition statement said Sabar Lal was killed in an operation late Friday in northeastern Nangarhar province.

The statement described Lal as an insurgent leader responsible for attacks and financing militant operations in neighboring Kunar province, who was in contact with top al-Qaida members in both Afghanistan and Pakistan and also had ties to the Taliban.

In other violence, NATO said two of its service members were killed Saturday in two separate incidents in southern Afghanistan. A NATO statement said one soldier died in an insurgent attack, the other one in a bomb blast. No other details were available.
