Pakistan Separatists Blow Up Three Gas Pipelines

Pakistani officials said separatist rebels have blown up three gas pipelines, leaving millions of households not able to heat their homes.

Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited officials said the militants attacked the Punjab province pipelines late Sunday. Punjab is Pakistan's wealthiest province and the power base of Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif.

Sui authorities say this is the first time the insurgents have attacked all three pipelines, which could take as long as three days to fix.

The separatist group Baluch Republican Army has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The B.R.A. is fighting for the independence of Baluchistan, Pakistan's poorest province. The militants accuse the federal government of looting the province's rich mineral resources, leaving its people to live in poverty.
