The U.S. Defense Department has charged a detained Pakistani national with helping al-Qaida plan terrorist attacks in the United States, Indonesia and elsewhere.
The Pentagon announced late Tuesday that a military commission has charged Majid Shoukat Khan with conspiracy, murder, spying and providing material support for terrorism.
Khan has been held in the U.S. military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, since 2003. He lived in the United States from 1996 to early 2001.
Military prosecutors allege that Khan conspired with the mastermind of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in the U.S., Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, in a plot to blow up underground gasoline storage tanks at gas stations in the U.S.
He is also accused of delivering $50,000 in al-Qaida funds to a Southeast Asia-based al-Qaida affiliate, which used the money to bomb a hotel in Indonesia in 2003.
