A Spanish matador was gored to death in the ring Saturday at a corrida in the town of Teruel, in eastern Spain.

The Red Cross said Victor Barrio, 29, was gored in the throat and abdomen and died later of his injuries.

His death, which aired live on television, made him the first bullfighter to die in the ring since at least 2000, Reuters reported.

A second man also was gored to death by a bull Saturday, during an early-morning bull run in Alicante, in southeastern Spain.

In Pamplona, two bullfighters were gored and 12 other people were injured in a bull run. The San Fermin festival is known for its morning bull run, where participants race ahead of specially bred fighting bulls on their way to the ring.

After Barrio's death, Teruel suspended bull-related events for the rest of the day.

Bullfighting is a Spanish tradition and many towns hold summer festivals involving bulls and bullfighting. However, some Spanish towns are considering banning the controversial sport, and festivals are coming under fire by animal rights groups who say bullfights and bull runs are cruel and dangerous.
