The Venezuelan military has attempted to block humanitarian aid from entering the country by barricading a bridge at a key border crossing.

The bridge was blocked by a fuel tanker, cargo trailer and makeshift fencing Tuesday at the Colombian border town of Cucuta.

Opposition leader Juan Guaido has said emergency food and medicine will begin flowing into Venezuela despite objections by embattled President Nicolas Maduro.

Alba Pereira of nonprofit Entre Dos Tierras says the roadblock is an intimidation tactic that won't accomplish anything.

She says Venezuelan officials want to prolong what she called an "absurd crisis" by ensuring shortages of food and medicine.

Colombian authorities say the Venezuelan National Guard built the barrier a day earlier.
