Among the nominees for the Academy Awards is a documentary about the oil boom in North Dakota. The state sits on a massive deposit, which in recent years has turned the region into the 2nd largest oil producer in the country. As a result, North Dakota has a glut of well-paying jobs and one of the lowest unemployment rates in the nation. But as VOA’s Rosanne Skirble reports, the development has changed lives and landscape in other ways too, as we see through the eyes of children. The film is called White Earth, which is also the name of the town it portrays.
