Officials in the northwestern U.S. state of Washington have certified a machine recount of last month's governor's race that shows Republican businessman Dino Rossi the winner by 42 votes, but they say this does not mean the race is over.
Late Tuesday, Washington Secretary of State Sam Reed certified a second count of the votes in the election for governor. It shows the race was decided by just 42 votes out of nearly three million - the closest gubernatorial race in that state's history.
Election officials say the recount confirms Mr. Rossi defeated Democratic Attorney General Christine Gregoire - but by less than the 162-vote margin of the first machine count.
Democrats are expected to request a manual recount later this week.
