Muslim pilgrims in the Saudi Arabian city of Mecca are completing the final rituals of the hajj, while their fellow Muslims around the world celebrate the feast known as Eid al-Adha, marking the pilgrimage's end.
Thousands of Saudi security forces and police were on duty this year to keep a record-breaking 2.5 million pilgrims moving, as well as to guard against terrorist attacks.
There were none of the deadly fires or stampedes that have marred previous pilgrimages. The only disruption was a rare thunderstorm Saturday that drenched worshippers symbolically tossing stones at the devil. Their pilgrimage will conclude with the circling of the black-draped Kaaba - which Muslims believe is the house of God.
There are more than a billion Muslims worldwide, and the hajj is a once-in-a-lifetime duty for every able-bodied one who can afford the trip to Mecca.
