Haiti Elections Set for Late 2005

Haitian officials have said local and national elections will be held later this year.

An official on Haiti's Provisional Electoral Council said local elections will be held on October 9, followed by presidential and legislative polls on November 13.

The dates were announced in an electoral decree recently sent to Haiti's interim government.

Security for the election remains a concern. Former soldiers and rebels who helped force Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide into exile in South Africa last February still control parts of the countryside. Violence in Port-au-Prince's pro-Aristide slums has killed more than 200 people in the last four months.
