Aftershocks Spark Panic in Indonesia's Aceh Province

A strong earthquake in Indonesia's Aceh province has sparked panic among thousands of residents who feared a tsunami would follow the quake.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage. Seismologists said the 6.0 magnitude tremor was centered under the Indian Ocean about 100 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital, Banda Aceh.

News agency reports say panicked residents fleeing their homes caused mayhem in the city, despite police efforts to quell fears of another tsunami.

People fled to higher ground and to mosques, many of which had withstood the devastating December 26 earthquake and tsunami. Aftershocks have been frequent in the region since the tsunami disaster, which killed more than 200,000 people, most of them in Indonesia.
