Paraguay Vows to Punish Those Responsible for Death of Cecilia Cubas

Paraguay's president has vowed to punish those responsible for the kidnapping and death of the daughter of former President Raul Cubas.

Addressing the nation Thursday, President Nicanor Duarte denounced criminals who are "masquerading as political activists or social leaders."

Police have detained several suspects in connection with the case, including a leftist activist. They also are looking into allegations that rebels of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) were involved in the woman's abduction.

Authorities found the body of Cecilia Cubas on Wednesday buried at a house south of the capital, Asuncion. She was kidnapped last September near the family home in Asuncion. The 32-year-old remained missing even though the family paid a large ransom.

Raul Cubas served as Paraguayan president from August 1998 to March 1999.
