Colombia Authorities Discover Drug Smuggling Submarine

Police in Colombia have discovered a homemade submarine capable of transporting up to 10 tons of cocaine.

Authorities found the submarine Friday hidden in the port of Tumaco, near the border of Ecuador. Officials with Colombia's secret police in the southern province of Valle del Cauca say the construction of the submarine began six months ago.

Police say no arrests have been made yet. The discovery of the underwater vessel is the second publicized case of Colombian drug smugglers trying to use submarines. In 2000, police found a large submarine far from the coastline, in Bogota.

Colombia produces more cocaine than any other country, and drug smugglers are constantly looking for ways to traffic the drug along the country's extensive coastline.
