Guinea Bissau's ousted former leader, Kumba Yalla, briefly occupied the presidential palace Wednesday before obeying military orders to leave.
Military officials said Mr. Yalla led a small band of supporters into the building in the capital, Bissau, around dawn. They say he left several hours later after the presidential guard and angry protesters surrounded the palace.
Mr. Yalla was elected president of the small, West African nation in 2000 but was ousted in a coup in 2003. Last week, he declared he is still the rightful ruler of the country.
The statement raised concerns that next month's elections will be plagued by unrest. Senegalese President Aboudaye Wade said Wednesday Guinea Bissau should now consider postponing the vote. Mr. Yalla is expected to be a candidate in the elections.
