Pakistan Resumes Quake Relief Efforts Halted by Bad Weather

Rescuers in Pakistan have stepped up efforts to deliver relief supplies to earthquake-hit areas, as Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visits Islamabad to express U.S. support for survivors of the quake.

Ms. Rice also meets with Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf during her brief visit.

Pakistani officials have said some 50,000 troops are fanning out in the stricken region to help survivors of Saturday's 7.6 magnitude quake that has killed more than 23,000 people.

Hundreds of thousands of people in remote towns and villages in northern Pakistan have been forced to live in the open for the past four days, without food, water and other basic supplies.

Thousands have fled the city of Muzaffarabad - the capital of Pakistani Kashmir - where the earthquake was centered.

Across the line of control, in Indian Kashmir, officials say the death toll has risen above 1400. A top regional official says more than 40,000 homes were destroyed in two frontier districts close to the epicenter of the quake.

The Indian military has resumed rescue and relief operations that were halted Tuesday due to bad weather.
