Nephew of Peruvian President Arrested on Rape Charges

A nephew of Peru's embattled President Alejandro Toledo has been arrested after skipping a court appearance on rape charges.

Miguel Toledo was arrested Tuesday in the capital city of Lima, three months after he failed to appear to hear the court's verdict on the charges. At the time, his lawyer claimed he was unable to attend because of an ear infection.

The 36-year-old Toledo and three other men are accused of drugging a 22-year-old woman and raping her in March 2004. He says the sex was consensual.

Prosecutors are seeking a six-year prison sentence.

This is the latest in a series of scandals that have plagued President Toledo since taking office in 2001. His sister Margarita is under house arrest on charges she engaged in an illegal election petition scheme.
